The decision to support

01. Define

ReRAM (resistive-switching memory) needs an oxide whose defect behaviour supports reliable, repeatable switching. The question for the technology owner: does amorphous Ta₂O₅ clear the bar, or should effort go elsewhere? Framed as a BCS evaluate-options problem — shortlist a candidate against defined viability criteria and produce a justified recommendation, not just raw findings.

The investigation was structured around testable hypotheses: that oxygen-vacancy defects form and migrate at energetically favourable cost, that electron/hole trapping is controllable, and that defect densities sit in a workable range for switching.

Structuring the evidence

02. Model

Before analysis, the quantities under study were defined as a clean dataset — a data dictionary fixing what each variable means, its units and its source method, so results were comparable and reproducible.

03. Analyse

Computed properties were visualised to expose the shape of the data, then benchmarked against an established reference oxide to give the numbers business meaning — "good" only makes sense relative to a known material.

Each Must requirement carried testable acceptance criteria; results from ARCHER2 runs were validated against known reference data within an agreed tolerance before sign-off.

The justified recommendation

05. Manage

Options appraisal → recommendation

Why · give the decision-maker a defensible call, not a data dump

Amorphous Ta₂O₅ is a conditionally viable ReRAM candidate: its vacancy formation and migration behaviour clear the bar, but trap-depth spread and defect density at the upper window are risks to control in fabrication. Recommendation framed as proceed-with-conditions, with the gaps named as the next investigation.

Gap analysis vs ReRAM requirements

Why · make the remaining distance to "ready" explicit

Mapped where the material already meets requirements versus where it falls short, turning open questions into a prioritised list for the technology owner.

Reflection

What I’d do differently next time

The discipline that made this land was fixing the viability criteria before generating the data, not after. It's tempting in research to follow the interesting physics; defining the decision table up front kept the analysis pointed at the actual question — is this material fit for purpose? — and made the recommendation defensible rather than a narrative built around whatever the results happened to show.
